It almost feels like an unwritten rule of parenthood: As soon as you spend $100 on a new pair of cleats, your child will outgrow them. It’s not just your imagination: On average, male feet don’t stop growing until around 16 or 17, and female feet don’t stop growing until around 14 or 15. That results in a lot of extra cleats taking up much-needed closet space. Fortunately, getting rid of this gear is easy. Rather than throwing soccer cleats away, consider the following:

 🔨 Get Fixable Cleats Repaired

Some worn and warped cleats may be repairable. Taking them to a local business or shoe repair shop is a wonderful way to give them a new life. While they might no longer fit your kiddo’s feet, they will fit someone else’s. Once you have them repaired, hand them down to a younger relative, sell them to a secondhand store, or, better yet, donate them (more on that below).

♻️ Recycle Cleats Beyond Repair

If your child’s cleats are beyond repair, consider recycling them. You can take a few routes to do this, including the following.

  • Stop by local recycling centers.

  • Visit Nike-owned stores; many Nike locations accept tattered shoes, including cleats, which workers recycle into materials for making playgrounds, tracks, basketball courts, and more.

  • Contact Terracycle, which offers a zero-waste program that recycles various types of footwear, including soccer cleats, as well as almost everything else.

🤝 Donate Gently Used Cleats

If your cleats are in decent shape and free of extreme wear and tear, donating them is a great way to do good and share the gift of soccer with someone else. PTJ Shoes offers a program that makes donating cleats quick and simple, and rewards you with a discount on a future purchase.

To participate, simply send your gently used cleats (of any size) to PTJ. The staff will distribute them to athletes in need and, as a thank you, will send you a discount code for 20% off.

You can’t stop your kiddo’s feet from growing, but you can reduce waste and give fellow soccer players a leg up. Repair, recycle, or donate your kiddo’s cleats, and purge them with purpose!

At PTJ Shoes, we strive to empower players of all levels to embrace their individuality and play with confidence. We take pride in being a brand founded on passion, driven by family values, and designed for the next generation of game-changers. Check out our elite collection of cleats here.
